In the late 1920’s and early 1930’s, the American Negro League emerged as a major back-owned enterprise. Drawing devoted fans dressed in their Sunday attires, enjoying familiar traditions like popcorn, cracker jacks, and hot dogs– all while passionately disputing calls with the umpire. Prior to the league’s establishment, few heroes were accessible to black Americans. Notably the league produced iconic figures such as Satchel Page, Josh Gibson, and Jackie Robinson. Lesser known but equally prolific players included pitcher, Burnalle “Bun” Hayes. Bun stood out as a star pitcher in the American negro League. Originating from Louisberg, NC, Bun’s journey included collegiate baseball at Johnson C. Smith University and North Carolina A&T, followed by stints with the Baltimore Black Sox, Chicago American Giants, Washington Pilots, and the Brooklyn Eagles, culminating in the conclusion of his baseball career with the Newark Dodgers in 1935. Post graduation, Bun earned a Master's degree in Education from Shaw University and transitioned into a distinguished role as a school principal. Bun, a quiet yet contributor to progress, has forever woven his presence into the fabric of Major League Baseball.
