Kit Callahan lived in London and Ireland for 20 years after receiving a BFA at Central School of Art and a MFA from Chelsea College of Art. Her work was included in exhibitions at the ICA,London, the Museum of Modern Art, Oxford and Art Basel. She has also had solo exhibitions at various galleries in London and Dublin.Her work is in the collections of the Arts Council of Great Britain and the Bolton Museum.
Callahan now works in a studio in Long Island City, NY. Since the 1970s she has done paintings based on a rectangular grid. At the same time she has been making small paintings that can stand alone or be assembled to create a large grid.
In addition, Callahan has focused on the shape of an ellipse floating within a rectangle. These ellipses appear in her etchings as well as in large wall drawings. Her etchings have been shown regularly at Manhattan Graphics Center. She has also had drawings in group shows at the Painting Center; Islip Art Museum, Katonah Art Museum, Newport Art Museum, Newport RI and Muscarelle Museum of Art, Williamsburg, VA.
